Characterizing porous disk wakes in different turbulent inflow conditions with higher-order statistics

چکیده
Abstract The wakes of a uniform and non-uniform porous disk exposed to two different turbulent flows are investigated experimentally. disks representative static wind turbine models found in literature. Six wake profiles were collected through hot-wire anemometry between three 30 diameters downstream the disks. Both one-point two-point statistics studied. results show that higher freestream turbulence affects more than disk, also changing wake’s shape recovery rate. Furthermore, we confirm earlier findings at centerline developed part is independent both design wake-generating object inflow. Similar turbine, ring high intermittency very edge inflow conditions. We identify existence this over range scales. that, even for higher-order statistics, qualitatively agrees well with models. Graphical abstract

Robust Higher Order Statistics
Sample estimates of moments and cumulants are known to be unstable in the presence of outliers. This problem is especially severe for higher order statistics, like kurtosis, which are used in algorithms for independent components analysis and projection pursuit. In this paper we propose robust generalizations of moments and cumulants that are more insensitive to outliers but at the same time re...
متن کاملAssessment of inflow boundary conditions for compressible turbulent boundary layers
A description of different inflow methodologies for turbulent boundary layers, including validity and limitations, is presented. We show that the use of genuine periodic boundary conditions, in which no alteration of the governing equations is made, results in growing mean flow and decaying turbulence. Premises under which the usage is valid are presented and explained, and comparisons with the...
متن کاملNonequilibrium scalings of turbulent wakes
The most basic and arguably most important property that any theory or model of turbulence must predict is the mean flow profile. A model or theory of turbulence which can do this for a wide range of turbulent flows on the basis of only few fundamental and robust assumptions is still lacking. However, in the case of canonical boundary-free turbulent shear flows such as turbulent jets, wakes, an...
متن کاملTurbulent wakes of fractal objects.
Turbulence of a windtunnel flow is stirred using objects that have a fractal structure. The strong turbulent wakes resulting from three such objects which have different fractal dimensions are probed using multiprobe hot-wire anemometry in various configurations. Statistical turbulent quantities are studied within inertial and dissipative range scales in an attempt to relate changes in their se...
متن کاملEffects of Pressure Gradient on Higher Order Statistics in Turbulent Boundary Layers
This paper investigates the effect and influence of pressure gradient on the skewness and flatness in turbulent boundary layers, which are subjected to adverse, zero and favourable pressure gradients. The large scale features are found to increase the skewness in the near wall-region for adverse pressure gradients in a manner similar to the effect of changing Reynolds number as documented by Me...
